Music has been a big part of my life. Whether it comes to working out, writing this page, or just relaxing, music has always motivated me to do what I do. It is also a great tool to get word spread to a large audience.
From artists of our generation such as Macklemore and Kendrick Lamar, to the infamous Beatles and Michael Jackson, singers/songwriters have brought the conflict of the world and tension into the listeners’ ears. Artists are able to portray their points in song and in music videos.
“Same Love,” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (ft. Mary Lambert) was one of the most influential songs I’ve heard in my lifetime. They were able to address the problems this world has with accepting those who are “different,” although we are all one in the same.
Michael Jackson did it with many songs, but what sticks out to me is his approach in “They Don’t Care About Us.”
“Tell me what has become of my life
I have a wife and two children who love me
I am the victim of police brutality, now
I’m tired of bein’ the victim of hate
You’re rapin’ me of my pride
Oh, for God’s sake
I look to heaven to fulfill its prophecy
Set me free” – Michael Jackson
